a tool that encourages the user to explore their urban environment, absorbing it in a way they don’t normally
Find Your Way is a two part zine that consists of a blank canvas and a wayfinding tool in the form of a paper fortune teller.
The idea is formed around situationist maps, maps that are devoid of time or length, and asemic writing which is a form of writing that suspends the user in a state of reading nad looking.
On its base level the zine is a playful exploration task but on a deeper level I hope to allow the user to express themselves artistically. Everything has been designed to have as little bias or influence on the user as possible with the only one restriction.
The zine has both the instructions and cover on one page, minimalising space and a back cover for easy of closing/orientating. The zine is folded into eighths with a slit in the middle allowing easy closure. This slit gives the zine a third dimension allowing the user to go through it onto the other side. The use of black over white is hypocritical of my goal to not limit the user since it forces them to use a white pen. This is so that more time is spent absorbing the surroundings rather than recording.
The second part of the project is the wayfinding tool. Inspired by the magic 8 ball I wanted the personal input when getting a random output in a way that can also be flat packed with the zine. It’s different to a normal fortune teller as there are no prompts, this is so there is no bias on the final answer which are: left, right and up.
