Perfect Dumplings

celebrating and documenting a dumpling workshop about conflicting identities

Being born in the UK with two Chinese parents in a small village I found myself often feeling alienated and grew up with a disconnect between my British and Chinese identities. Perfect Dumplings is the documentation of a bring your own filling dumpling workshop that I held as a way to explore this disconnect and liberate myself of the conflict between my identities.

The final zine is sized to mimic that of the real dumplings to recreate the experience of holding the dumplings. The small size of the zine along with the handmade aspect such as the binding allows me to create a personal connection between the reader and the dumplings in the zine. The contents of the zine are riso printed in a vibrant red and yellow with a black half tone on top to emphasis the vibrant colours and light hearted characteristics of the dumplings.

This topic is personal and serious to me and is something only recently I’ve started to tackle, through this playful zine I hope to reach others going through a similar situation communicating that it is okay and not as daunting as it can seem.
