a sculpture made to challenge and critique plastic packaging
Sustenance aims to explores the idea of packaging, what it is and how it could potentially be more.
Single use plastics are everywhere even with the rise of alternative such as starch based plastics. The need for them at all is something to be questioned, often used to upsell something such as produce that is packaged rather than being loose despite it having a natural ‘packaging’ such as a banana.
As a designer I understand the packaging has a huge part to play in the experience and perceived value of something. With Sustenance I challenge the way I view packaging and instead question what it would be like if it were hyper utilitarian. In this sculpture an egg is encased in a sustainable agar agar solution, this opens the door to addition to this solution with things like vitamins. The colouring, while flavourless, challenges the way that packaging affects the way we perceive things.
